I came across this video of a drunk man causing a ruckus with a police officer. After a few seconds into the video, all of a sudden, a guy comes and gives the drunk man a hug. The guy didn’t say anything in the video but it looked like he understood the drunk man's situation. And the drunk man started bawling his eyes out on the guy's shoulder. I was so touched by the video and was amazed that the guy noticed that the drunk man needed someone who could understand his anxiety.
As you know, there’s been a spike in copycat threats of people going around and randomly stabbing others all over Korea. When I read some articles about them, I could easily find the interviews of perpetrators saying that they hate the world, life is tough, and they even want to go to jail, etc. They don't really have any concrete reason for what they’re doing They just have so much anxiety in their life. Apparently, many of them are struggling with unemployment and I guess they’re taking all their pent-up stress out by killing anyone they see.
Seeing these examples got me thinking that anxiety can drive people to make undesirable choices. According to one expert column, to address these cruelties, we need to show interest in their lives rather than throw stones at them. Most of them went through poverty, social apathy, and lived isolated lives. They never really experienced real support from the government or even close relationships. Therefore, to get to the bottom of these issues, we need to give support to people who have been through hardship. Obviously, that doesn’t apply to psychopaths out there.
As my MBTI type is INFP, I totally understand how anxiety can mess with your head. I also understand the effect of real support from others. I can move forward as I know that my loved ones will be there for me even when I fail to do something or make some mistakes. Just like the drunk man in the video who only needed a little support and someone to understand, this kind of anxiety can be soothed easily with just warm and genuine support.
As time goes on, we increasingly find ourselves being surrounded by all sorts of anxieties. To make a safe barricade and prevent people, including ourselves, from making messed-up choices, we need to show each other real interest and support.
