What makes a good life? Lessons from the longest study on happiness
What keeps us happy and healthy as we go through life? If you think it's fame and money, you're not alone – but, according to psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, you're mistaken. As the director of a 75-year-old study on adult development, Waldinger has unpre

I think the last sentence of this video, 'The good life is built with good relationships', aptly summarizes the essence of its content. When it comes to defining a good relationship, I agree with the video's description of it as a close and trustworthy bond. In other words, it entails a relationship where both parties have the belief that despite occasional arguments, they will support each other during difficult times. Remarkably, a 75-year-long study has revealed that individuals who maintain such relationships tend to be happier, healthier, and even have better memory than anyone else.
As I got older and found myself frequently exposed to competitive situations, I started prioritizing my own career and personal growth over taking care of those around me. I accepted the idea propagated by YouTubers that interpersonal relationships will naturally follow if I achieve success in life. Consequently, I distanced myself from relationships, considering them as sacrifices for the sake of my future. However, as this pattern became ingrained, I started doubting people and found it increasingly hard, to be honest and open with them. This made building and maintaining relationships more challenging for me. As a result, I started experiencing mild depression, and naturally, my learning ability was also affected to some extent.
After watching this video, I reflected on my past life and realized that throughout all the hardships, I had my family and loved ones by my side, comforting me with delicious meals, providing emotional support, and helping me through problems. They were the ones who helped me overcome all the difficulties I faced. I now understand that a good life is not about earning a lot of money, gaining fame, or achieving high social status. It's about finding strength and support in relationships that truly stand the test of time and facing adversities together. I didn't fully appreciate the importance of such relationships before, but now I realize that they are closely linked to my life goals.
Building trusting relationships may not have a clear end or immediate visibility, but it influences every aspect of our lives as we live them. Therefore, I decided to start trusting someone who deeply connects with me and make ongoing efforts to nurture that trust. There will definitely be challenges in the process of building trust, but I will face them head-on rather than avoiding them. Lastly, I would like to express my thanks to my family and friends who have always supported me throughout my rocky journey. Thank you for listening.
