The TED talk I chose for this week is "the power of believing that you can improve" presented by Carol Dweck. In one study Carol Dweck and her team conducted, they provided students with difficult questions and they showed two different reactions. One group reacted by saying that it is a fun challenge for them and they love to explore. The other group felt tragic and catastrophic. Surprisingly, when scientists measured the electrical activity in their brains, the results came out differently, the one group that received difficult questions as tragic showed hardly any activity, but the other group was actively active. It means that the group that takes the difficult questions as challenging and loves to explore is more deeply engaged in the question than the other. Long story short, what she wants us to know is when faced with difficulty thinking that "we have just not solved it yet" enhances our brain's capacity to learn and to solve the problem.
Actually, I was surprised that I had thought exactly the same way as what she was trying to say. When I am confronted with difficult questions, I don’t feel too stressed as I think I'm still in the learning process, and that at some point, I will understand. And this is always the case even though it sometimes can take a little bit more time than I anticipated. However, this mindset also had a bad effect on my GPA at university as I didn't hesitate to take classes that were known for their low scores. But I don't regret it because I could gain valuable knowledge and discover an interest in a subject which I never imagined I could study.
Nowadays many young people focus more on rewards than genuine learning. So, they easily feel like giving up and feel dumb when they fail to get rewards. So, it is important to think we are in the learning process and that adversity is just a problem that has not been solved yet rather than obsessing over the result. If you have this growth mindset, you can achieve more success than when you only focus on the rewards.
So what do you think about the growth mindset? and do you have any experience with it? If you have any it would be great if you share your experience! Thank you for your listening:)
